Do not close the crate at the beginning.
Let the puppy explore the crate and make it inviting with toys and food.
Only when your pup is comfortable and goes inside on his own you can start closing the gate for increasing amounts of time.
Keep the crate where the puppy can see you, in traffic areas of the house so your whippet won't feel crating like a punishment.
