Zeus: My Mythological Whippet Puppy

by Mariah Rae
(Marysville, Ca, U.S)

Zeus and Me

Zeus and Me

This is the story of Zeus, our whippet puppy.

My name is Mariah Kochanowicz (last name granted to me by my husband :D). My husband, Branden, and I are originally from Omaha Nebraska but his duty to the Air Force led us to Marysville California.

My husband was told of an upcoming deployment where he would be required to leave the country and me behind.

We are only 20 years old and have no children, and my husband didn't want me to be alone.

I told him of an uncle of mine who had a farm and who raised Whippets and how much I loved them because they were such loving adoring companions. So he did some research and he too wanted a Whippet. We found a breeder and we had our Zeus.

We were there from the beginning when he was born and waited until 8 weeks to have him with us.

He was so smart and loving. The day we brought him home he was already potty trained and learned sit, lay down, and stay.

He's an amazing dog and now that my husband has gone he's my best friend and keeps me not only busy but happy. I love him. :D

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: My Gretta

by Lorena Bybee
(San Jose, Costa Rica)

She is calm at home, but when she is outdoor she becomes a very proud, happy jumping dog and not to mention a fast dog.

She loves to be in bed very cozy, very warm also. I really want to have another dog.

In the boat

When we first picked up our lovely little whippet Penny we were heading to my uncles holiday house near the beach.

She got to ride in the boat...walk on the sand...watch the waves and fall asleep cuddled up in my jumper in the front of the boat. Sounds like the perfect beach holiday to me...(she even caught a fish in the shallows!)

This is what happened when 8-week-old Baubo the Whippet (white & brindle blur) met her "cousin," Vida, the one-year-old Chihuahua (little brown blur), for the first time.

Instant puppy happiness - and evenly matched featherweights!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Molly's First Photo Shoot

by Kym McCrary
(Missouri)

Posing for the camera

Posing for the camera

I had been searching for a gentle dog for my 8 year old daughter and I to add to our family. I had been "following" an ad on craigslist.com in our local area and kept seeing pictures of Molly in an ad posted by her first family.

After about a month of seeing this beautiful dog and the post disappear, I came across the ad on another free classified ad website. I contacted her owners that day, we met that evening and within the hour of meeting Molly Finnegan.

My daughter was in heaven and smiling from ear to ear. Molly has only been with us for a few days now, but Molly blended right into our home and in our hearts already.

I decided to test Molly out in my little homemade photo-studio and she was an awesome model. She posed so well and took to sitting and laying down quite quickly.

The previous owners were told that Molly was a mixture of Whippet, Greyhound and Boxer, but the more pictures of I see of Whippets online, I have to say that Molly leans more on the Whippet, Greyhound side. Thank for letting us share our story.....

Kym, Anya and Molly Finnegan!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Poetry In Motion

Nude Sunbathing

Nude Sunbathing

Cisco was the first whippet I ever owned. Of course I now have another one but I have so many pictures and great memories from me and him together that I often reflect on those priceless times.

It's funny how I was always kind of worried about getting another whippet because I was afraid he would not be as polite, loving, smart, agile, etc,etc as Cisco was.

The fact of the matter is... I was wrong. The whippet I have now is SO much like Cisco, it is amazing.

Basically what I have learned from this is that it's more what we do as humans and the way we raise our dogs that determines their behavior more than anything else.

Cisco taught me so much about myself and who I am and the discoveries we made together that he can not be purchased or replaced.

Once a whippet owner, always a whippet owner.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Another Day on the Trail

Long day on the trail. Water break!

Long day on the trail. Water break!

This is the first whippet I ever had and I had to put him down in 2008 due to old age and because it was simply the right thing to do.

He was a a great Backpacking dog and every chance I could I would take him on multi-day trips through the woods. It was such a joy to watch him in his natural habitat as he transformed into his instinctual mode.

R.I.P. my friend. You will always be remembered.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Cooper is Santa's Favorite Elf

by Jordan Parsels
(Arlington, Virginia, USA)

Santa's Favorite Elf

Santa's Favorite Elf

Cooper was born July 23rd 2008. I rescued him from Virgina Tech's veterinary school. He was the only blond out of 12 other brindle puppies. I fell in love with him at first sight.

Cooper is my first dog, and I definitely have had some crazy experiences with him. From the day I brought him home he showed me he was a picky eater. Never wanting to eat when I put food down.

I always wondered when he ate because I would wake up in the morning and his food would be gone. As he got older I began to notice that Cooper loved to eat in the middle of the night while we were sleeping.

Cooper is a spoiled "lapdog" even though in my opinion he is too big to be sitting in laps! He loves to sleep under the covers, something my boyfriend taught him to do at a young age. He occasionally comes up for air in the middle of the night and then promptly goes back under.

One of the first things I noticed about Cooper was his love of running free. He is one of the fastest dogs I have ever seen. I always wanted to enter him into some kind of dog agility race because his quickness is simply unmatched.

Cooper's best friend is a mid-size Australian Shepherd belonging to my parents. When these two are together...look out!! They leap and bound together until they simply can't move anymore. And then they nap together. I couldn't ask for a better play-mate.

Cooper has brought so much love and happiness that I never thought a dog could bring. He is the best thing that has come into my life & I only hope that I make him as happy as he makes me.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Tessa's Time in the Corner

by Donna
(Moravia , NY)

This is Tessa, my rescue whippet. She seems to love being dressed up ... the better to cope with being an upstate NY doggy.

I took her to a friends house to visit one afternoon. She was feeling a little shy so plopped herself in the corner away from all the goings on and relaxed a little bit.

I have seen her sit this way several times and wonder if other whippet owners have seen their dogs relaxing in unusual positions. She's a doll and I am now crazy about whippets and look forward to the day I can adopt a whippet playmate for her.

Lazy Boy on my Laz-a-Boy!

by Mary Ann Baker
(Anaheim, CA)

This is Tiger, a very naughty whippet. My life changed the day Tiger entered my life mouth first! Along with personality, panache, and pleasure Tiger brought reckless abandon to his new home.

To date I have had three concussions and a dislocated shoulder in his eleven years with me. Many would say that he is a dangerous dog. The correct word would be rambunctious.

Tiger was born to a breeder who bred for show. His tattooed serial number on his inner thigh lends credence to his past breeding. Because he was unpredictable in the ring he was put up for adoption.

His first home was not successful. His new owners, a married couple without children, tried to leave him alone all day, in a crate, while they worked. Tiger suffered from separation anxiety which caused him to act out. Not only does he bear a large ugly scar on his forehead from a beating by the male adopted parent, he often cries in his sleep.

Not long after my vet had rescued him again, she offered Tiger to me when I put down my female whippet. When I picked him up I met his litter mate Adam. Adam suffered a similar history. It wasn't long before I adopted Tiger's brother Adam. When we brought his brother home Tiger was beside himself with joy! They played endlessly in my backyard looking much like they did when they were puppies.

I came upon this opportunity to tell about his happy life because we are looking to adopt a new rescue whippet. Last week Tiger's brother Adam went to heaven. He suffered from heart disease and cancer. Adam was a perfect dog and he is missed. Tiger seems lost after twelve years of contentment with his brother.

Tiger has watched many people come in and out of his life. First it was my ex-husbands departure. Then my father passed away in my home and my mother went to a nursing home. In this picture of him, Tiger watches the door for my brother to return when he moved away after living with us for two years. There was also a succession of roommates that came and went.

My hope is for Tiger to have one more playmate for life. I try very hard to make his days joyful by pampering him with unconditional love. That is what rescuing whippets is all about for those of us who care.

As an adoptive parent, I receive love and joy for helping my whippets after a false start in their lives.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: From Shy to Fly

by Kerrie Howard
(Sidbury, Devon, UK)

We answered an add in the local paper about one little whippet boy who nobody wanted.

After traveling nearly 3 hours we were greeted by a little old lady who took us to this run down house. Something didn't feel right about the place or the lady.

When we asked to see the pup she told us to wait while she went and fetched him. We asked why we couldn't see the mother and pup together this is when we realized that we might have stumbled onto a puppy farm.

She told us that the bitch had been kicked by a donkey and had to be put down and that the pup was in a kennel out the back. My husband and I looked at each other.

She went off and ten minutes later turned up with this tiny brindle blue whippet puppy. He was filthy, shaking, and clearly frightened. We just couldn't turn our backs on him, we handed over our money and took the trembling cold pup home with us.

After a 3 hour journey of sickness we got home and settled our new baby into his home with his new friend Rio (our 4 month old Belgium shepherd).

We named him Otis. Rio and Otis were the best of friends from the minute they set eyes on each other. Otis couldn't get enough of cuddling up to another dog.

Sadly a few weeks later Rio became very ill and had to be put down, Otis was tested for Parvo and we were asked to get in touch with both dogs breeders.

When I contacted Otis breeder she informed me that she never had her dogs injections done, she simply used homeopathic medicine. I was horrified!

Otis had to have tests, extra injections, the vet discovered that he had a parrot jaw, and one testicle. He was also coming out with big blisters all over his body.

It was a waiting game to see if Otis was going to go the same way as Rio. Finally the tests came back clear. He seemed to be a real fighter.

We decided that we would get another puppy for Otis and along came Mango our labradoodle. They are the best of friends, sleeping, eating and playing together. And although Mango weighs in at nearly 5 and half stone, Otis the whippet is top dog.

They race around the fields together. Otis knowing he can swing from Mango's ear and then run at top speed to get away! You will be glad to know that the lady who we got Otis from has been investigated.

We reported her and she has been fined and banned from breeding dogs. I wanted to share our story and photos simply because we love little Otis so much and we are so proud of him.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: What About Me?

by Debra
(Shoreline WA, USA)

Baubo

Baubo

This is Baubo the whippet, our 2-months-old sweetie, wondering why she was on the other side of the kitchen gate as we prepared our Thanksgiving feast.

Baubo is our first whippet and such a funny little pup! We fell in love the moment we met ... she was all of three weeks old and so tiny she tripped over the loops in the carpet!

Now she zips around the house and we see nothing but a blur ... until the gate gets in her way and keeps her safe from big busy feet!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Baby Shadow & Bryny Brindle

by Liz Jones
(Aberdeenshire, Scotland)

cat napping?

cat napping?

Our two whippet puppies Baby Shadow & Bryny Brindle were born on 20th september 2010.

They have the wonderful nature of both parents Mum Dusty & Daddy Shadow. They all give us so much joy and the antics of the pups never fails to amuse us.

Tommy the cat grew up along side Daddy Shadow and I'm quite convinced he believes he's a whippet. He spends all his time now with the puppies, eating, sleeping & playing with them.

Although Baby Shadow is the bigger of the two pups it is Bryny Brindle that is the leader. There is nothing on earth that can compare with a whippet.

Two Peas in a Pod?

Two Peas in a Pod?

I have 2 whippets, Molly(10, white and tan), and Sophie(6, brindle).

They have numerous beds throughout the house, but most of the time, they choose to sleep together like this in this old bed I'm trying to replace.

Oh well....as they say, old slippers(or beds) are the most comfortable sometimes I guess.
