Best Collar for New Whippet Pup

What size collar would I get an 8 week old whippet pup?

We'll be getting a new whippet pup soon and I want to have a collar for her before I pick her up at the airport so I can let her out of the crate to do her business ASAP.

I've only had large breed dogs in the past and don't think that I should get the same size I did for our Dane mix...

ANSWER:

You are definitely right, the Dane mix collar won't do for your whippet pup! And it is a very good idea to be ready for an emergency.

Such a young whippet puppy in an unfamiliar situation might be quite difficult to control with a regular collar, I would rather use a nylon harness for small dogs… and be ready with a newspaper or a puppy pad.

Once safely at home you can start collar training your pup with a light, adjustable nylon collar.

When your whippet is comfortable with the nylon collar it will be time to begin leash training, first just letting her drag a nylon leash for a short time and then gradually build her leash skills.

I would wait to buy a proper whippet collar until she is older, used to collar and leash and past the chewing stage.

What are the best collars for whippets and where can I find them?

ANSWER:

The safest collars for walks are the martingale collars. They tighten gently if your whippet backs up.

For everyday use around the house I like the traditional wide hound collars.

A friend of mine is right now in Orlando for vacation, I would like to know a dog store so I can tell her exactly where to go and buy it!

For me, the best source of collars of excellent quality and value is e-bay.
