I do not have a whippet, I have a Samoyed, and am hoping to get a whippet. I live in a 2 bedroom bungalow. Bedroom number 2, the smallest, became the dog room where his crate and everything else related to him is kept. When he came home as a 10 week old puppy I put him at night in an open crate in this room. I spread newspapers over the floor around the crate so that he could toilet when he needed too. The door of the room had a dog gate installed so he was limited to that room. Apart from a couple of accidents in other places in the house during the day, this worked pretty well. He cried a bit for the first few nights then accepted the status quo. Gradually I reduced the amount of newspaper and he still peed on it and not on floor. Apart from this I took him out into the garden about every 20 minutes during the day and after eating, sleeping and playing and spoke the signal word ‘pee pee’ and gave lots of praise when he performed. I am 65 and I sleep appallingly and have to take sleeping pills, so it is important that I sleep through the night especially when it comes to stocking up on the energy levels required for a young puppy. If I chose to have the crate in the bedroom I don’t think I would sleep well at all.
