A lot of whippets here have trouble with itchy feet because they walk in grass that has been treated with various chemicals, dog parks and dirty lots where there is plenty of bacteria and then walk on hot (or cold) pavement/sidewalks, etc.
My whippet Gucci has always reacted by biting and chewing at his feet until they are red and raw.
I watch for this to occur and then I give him just ONE PREDNISONE of 20 mg...and no more than ONCE A WEEK!
This is such a low dose (and I hate steroids of any kind) that it cannot do him, or any whippet, the slightest harm AND YET IT STOPS HIS ITCHY FEET WITHIN HOURS!
All my doctors (40-50 years of whippets) have agreed with this.
Although he is still walked on the same polluted grass every day, his feet don't bother him for a very long time, after just one 20 mg. Prednisone.
He may only get one pill every six months but, if he starts to chew, he gets that pill.
